Reminders for Winter 2011-2012

Since Christmas Day and New Years Day both fall on a Sunday this year, there will be no interruption in service collection days. However, yard debris collection ends on December 29th. If you have yard debris to be collected after this date, place your items curbside on your 2nd collection day (Friday) until the yard debris season resumes the 1st week of March 2012. After the holiday season, Christmas trees will be collected on Fridays. We ask that all tinsel and decorations are removed. Please do not place trees in plastic bags.
Safety in your community is ADS’s primary concern. Roads and/or areas which are deemed unsafe due to snow or ice will be suspended for collection. If suspension occurs, services will resume on the next regularly scheduled collection day.

What is accepted in Regular Trash?

Household waste only, no construction or remodeling waste. No Household Hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, oil, gas, antifreeze, corrosive chemicals, etc.). For more information on Household Hazardous Waste contact the Loudoun County Office of Solid Waste @ 703-771-5500.

What is accepted in the Recycling collection? (new information for 2010)

ADS now uses Single Stream Recycling, which eliminates the need to bundle and separate your recyclables and allows more types of items. See the ADS Recycling Flyer for a complete list. Some accepted items are: Plastic bottles and jugs #1-7 and lids, wide-mouth plastic containers, metal food and beverage containers, aerosol cans, glass bottles and jars, rigid plastics, gable-top milk and juice cartons,  newspapers and all inserts, phone books, mixed paper, and cardboard boxes (unflattened). See below for new information on Recycling Carts for 2010.

What is accepted as Yard Waste?

Grass clippings and leaves should be bagged. Brush and limbs should be bundled. Limbs should not exceed four feet in length and six inches in diameter. Items that are bagged or bundled are not to exceed 50 lbs. Concrete, bricks, blocks and dirt are not acceptable.

What metallic items are picked up?

ADS offer a Metallic Item Removal Service at an additional charge per item. Includes white goods such as stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators, dryer, hot water tanks and other bulky metallic items. Refrigerators, Freezers and Air Conditioning units must have the Freon removed and tagged by a certified technician. Call ADS at 1-703-368-0500 at least 24 hours in advance for pricing and scheduling.

What is allowed in the Bulk Collection?

ADS offers a Bulk Removal Service at an additional charge per item. Bulk Service includes items such as mattresses, sofas, tables, chairs, etc. Call ADS at 1-703-368-0500 at least 24 hours in advance for pricing and scheduling.

Holidays

Trash and recyclables pickup are provided on all holidays that fall on a regularly scheduled pickup day. The only exceptions are: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. When a designated pickup day falls on one of these holidays, trash and recyclables will not be picked up. In these situations, trash should NOT be placed outside in designated areas until the next regularly scheduled pickup. Recyclables pickup for 2009 will be Saturday December 26 and Saturday January 2. Christmas trees are collected on the regular yard waste pickup day, which is Friday. Remove all tinsel and decorations from trees and do not place trees in plastic bags.

Trash and Recycling Containers - New Information for 2010

ADS will supply one 64-gallon recycling cart (on wheels) to each single-family residence as ADS is expanding their recycling program (see ADS Recycling Flyer). Single family home owners do not need to make a request for this cart; ADS will automatically deliver the 64-gallon recycling cart to each single-family residence in early January 2010. A 96-gallon trash cart was provided during the previous contract term(replacement trash carts are available for any lost/stolen/ missing or damaged carts, please see below for more info).

ADS will supply one 64-gallon recycling cart and one 64-gallon trash cart to each townhome residence, upon request only from the townhome owner (see below, request must be made by March 30, 2010). Each residence is free to use the new recycle carts or continue using their current 16-gallon recycle bins based on the volume of their recycling. However, please be advised that the larger recycle carts have been included in the contract since most residences have a larger volume of recyclables than the current 16-gallon bin allows for. With the larger recycle carts, there should be no excuse for loose recyclables such as newspapers, yard waste, and glass or plastic bottles being placed at the curb uncontained to blow into another resident’s yard.

As referenced above, ADS will replace any lost, stolen, missing or damaged recycling carts and/or trash carts at no charge through March 30, 2010. If you need a replacement cart or do not have a cart, you MUST request it through ADS after January 1, 2010 and no later than March 30, 2010; otherwise, you will be charged for the cart(s). The phone number to request a cart is 703-368-0500. After March 30, 2010, ADS will charge a $75 replacement charge for each cart that is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair and the charge will be billed to the homeowner. The current 16-gallon recycle bin replacement charge is $10 per bin.

The Courts and Ridges at Ashburn Architectural Guidelines state:

Trash shall be placed at the curb for pick-up in containers manufactured for trash storage purposes only. Residents must ensure trash containers have securely fitting lids at all times. Paper or plastic bags are not sufficient for trash removal due to the likelihood of animals breaking into them.

Trash is not to be placed out for pick-up prior to 6:00 PM of the day before pick-up. Trash containers shall be removed from the curb at the earliest opportunity after the trash has been collected.

Single-family home trash containers may remain outdoors so long as they are kept either along the side of the house, or out of view in the rear of the house. Please see ARB Guideline 6.11 for details on keeping containers at the side of the house.

Townhouse and Patio home trash containers may remain outdoors so long as they are kept in the backyard up against a fence or back wall.

Trash containers shall not be stored anywhere in front of the house or driveway.

All recycle bins must be stored inside the home.

Recycling is mandatory in Loudoun County

Loudoun County has had a mandatory recycling requirement in place since 1991 for both residents and businesses. New recycling requirements became effective January 1, 2003. These requirements make it mandatory for residents to separate newspapers and magazines, container glass, metal and aluminum cans and plastic beverage and detergent containers from household waste for recycling. Additionally residents are also required to separate cardboard, paperboard and yard waste.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) e.g. Oil-based paints, thinners and solvents; corrosives; insecticides, pesticides and herbicides; gasoline, kerosene and diesel; photographic chemicals, hobby and pool chemicals; and rechargeable batteries.
